A LONG TIME AGO, A SAILOR named Seb set off on a journey across the Indian Ocean seeking adventure. One day, he was caught in a storm, and washed ashore a large, deserted island brimming with dense mangrove forests, fruit-laden trees, abundant sea life, and more. He named it—Raaya.

While this tale is fictitious, there’s no denying the spirit of adventure at this recently launched, lavish resort on the idyllic island of Kudakurathu in Raa Atoll. A 45-minute seaplane flight from Malé Airport, it was here that I was introduced to the legend of Seb, a character lovingly created by the property. In fact, the castaway’s artwork and constructions are strewn across Raaya for guests to enjoy—how wonderfully imaginative! The resort is impressively expansive, and one is gripped by a sense of discovery when navigating its lush greenery and never-ending stretch of white-sand beaches.

My sense of wonder grew as I stepped into my inviting water villa, with stunning ocean views, an outdoor pool, and direct access to the lagoon below from a private deck, replete with a cozy sitting area. Mine was one of a total of 167 water and beach villas, each sharing a contemporary aesthetic with spacious living areas. The well-stocked minibar, with its selection of wines, soft drinks, and snacks, takes indulgent in-room relaxation up a notch!

Given that this is an all-inclusive property, the RAAYA Plan™ offers a wealth of attractions for its guests to enjoy. This includes all meals and premium beverages across their many restaurants, yoga and Pilates classes, snorkelling and other water sports, luxe treatments at the ELE|NA spa, and even fun pastimes for young ones at the Discovery Den kids club. And that’s true when it comes to gastronomic desires, too. I fell in love with AMPERS&ND, serving delectable Pan-Asian fare in an open-air setting. The SOAQ Pool Bar came in a close second with its breezy vibe, refreshing cocktails, and appetising bites, while Raaya Life offered a fresh start to the day with an amazing buffet breakfast. Laid-back Seb’s Shack offers smoothies on the beach, and the Middle-Eastern MIZAJ is ideal for a magical evening.
