How It All Started
I grew up in a middle-class, close-knit family in Delhi, but as a child, I did not have a clear vision of what I wanted to become when I grew up. I admired Madhuri Dixit-Nene’s expressions and dance moves and, at times, aspired to be an actress. Being passionate about dance, I even learnt kathak for five years. There were times when I considered teaching as a profession, too, envisioning a career in education like my mother. Eventually, I pursued a degree in engineering. Despite my initial shyness, my journey took an unexpected turn in college when I won the Times Fresh Face contest. This win, which included a portfolio shoot with Dabboo Ratnani, propelled me into the world of modelling. But the uncertainty continued until I started doing TV commercials, which made me realise my love for acting. The subsequent flood of offers led me to sign my first film. But I made a deal with my parents and ensured a good score in my GMAT exam as a backup plan. Looking back at the girl who was once navigating engineering and discovering her passion for acting, I am thankful for the guiding energy that has led me to where I am today. Every day, when I face the camera, I am certain that this
is my calling!
How It’s Going
And, boy has it been amazing or what! Every genre, whether comedy, drama, or action, has contributed to this incredible sojourn of self-discovery. Each character and movie, from Heropanti to Mimi, has helped in shaping not only my career but also my understanding of the acting craft and its impact on the audience. While I did have low phases, I also had people who believed in me, which kept me going.
Winning Streak
There is a huge sense of gratitude in my heart whenever I think of the moment my National Award win for Mimi was announced. I remember the look of pride on my parents’ faces when I received the award from the President of India at Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi. The feelings we all shared in that moment are truly special. I feel extremely blessed to have seen this moment that every actor craves in their career, within just a decade of being in the industry. It is also overwhelming and makes me want to work harder. There is so much more I want to do as an actor and human being.
Travel Tales
I love travelling and Maldives was one of the places on my bucket list. I vacationed there with my family and had a wonderful time. We played old songs and sang along under starry skies! I’m a complete water baby, so I made sure to try all the different kinds of aquatic activities. Spending quality time with family in that pristine island paradise is a travel memory I cherish, and wish to go on more such vacations with them. Hopefully soon! Another travel memory close to my heart is going skydiving. The adrenaline rush and the panoramic views made it an exhilarating experience that I’ll always remember. It was jumping out of my comfort zone, quite literally! As for foodie experiences, I enjoy exploring various cuisines when I travel. I like trying the local food of the destination, but if it is a long trip, at some point I crave Asian cuisines and other comfort foods.
Creating Hyphen
I never imagined I’d start a brand, but my passion for skincare intensified during the lockdown. While on a trip for a movie shoot, I had some issue with skin damage. And I realised there weren’t enough gentle products in the market for my skin type. That’s when the idea struck me—why not use my scientific educational background to create something of value? And that’s how Hyphen was born. I delved into the intricacies of ingredients, aiming to combine the potency of science with the power of nature to offer skincare solutions. I am also the Chief Customer Officer, so I find time to go online, interact with customers, see reviews of products on social media, and gauge the interest for other products we could come up with. The positive response from customers keeps me going.
Health Goals
I’m a bona fi de fitness enthusiast and like to push my limits to constantly rediscover myself. I believe in ʻprogress over perfection’, so even a small step every day can make a huge impact. Training professionally in a specific dance form has also fuelled my need for a fitness routine.
Fashion First
My style is usually a reflection of my mood—sometimes chic, sometimes laid-back. Whether it’s a red-carpet event or casual outing, I like my outfits and looks to mirror the different facets
of my personality.
The Art of Unwinding
After long shoots, I like to watch the shows I’ve missed out on and catch up with family. Spending time with my loved ones is the most comforting feeling ever. I also like to test new products for my brand. Oh, and I love scrolling through social media just like everyone else!
What’s Next
I’m shooting for Do Patti and have a film coming up alongside Shahid Kapoor. There’s also The Crew with Tabu and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Lots to look forward to in 2024!
